Denver teens set out for Syria to join extremists; parents, FBI bring them back

Three teenage girls who set out from a Denver suburb apparently bound for Syria to join extremists fighting there are back home after their parents alerted authorities and the trio was stopped in Germany, U.S. officials said.

The teens -- two sisters of Somali descent and a friend whose family is Sudanese, according to a Denver community leader -- were detained when their flight landed in Frankfurt on Friday after the FBI flagged their passports. They were flown back to Denver on Sunday, officials said.

It was a night when UEFA Champions League goalscoring records tumbled, FC Bayern München becoming the first team to score five first-half goals away from home – only to be quickly supplanted by FC Shakhtar Donetsk, whose striker Luiz Adriano matched Lionel Messi's individual scoring feat.

A record 40 goals were scored in the Champions League on Tuesday—the most in any single day of competition in European club football’s most prestigious competition—and 21 of them came in three incredible matches.

In the Italian capital, visiting Bayern Munich thumped AS Roma 7-1, while in London, hosts Chelsea shellacked Maribor 6-0. Shakhtar Donetsk also ran up the score in Belarus, where they hammered BATE Borisov 7-0.

CSKA Moscow came back from two goals down to draw Manchester City 2-2, and until Edinson Cavani’s late winner in Cyprus it looked as though Paris Saint-Germain were headed to a share of the points against APOEL.

Elsewhere, Barcelona beat Ajax 3-1 at Camp Nou, Porto were 2-1 winners at home to Athletic Bilbao and Schalke scored a controversial winner to prevail 4-3 over Sporting CP in Gelsenkirchen.

ISIS suspect faces jail

FROM (CNN) -- At first Alon Meyer thought it was a bad joke.

When Kreshnik Berisha, the first suspected member of ISIS to stand trial in Germany, was arrested upon his arrival back in Frankfurt in December after spending six months in Syria, youth team football coach Meyer was left shell-shocked.

The coach thought for a while and then it slowly sank in -- this was the same boy who had once stood by his side and taken the field in the shirt of Makkabi Frankfurt, Germany's largest Jewish sports club.

Meyer's phone began to buzz with journalists trying to ask him whether he remembered Berisha, a 20-year-old born in Frankfurt to Kosovan parents.

Oscar Pistrious sentenced to 5 years in prison

For killing his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp on Valentine's Day in 2013, double-amputee athlete Oscar Pistorius has been sentenced to 5 years in prison by Judge Thokozile Masipa.

The following was what she considered before imposing her sentence.
1. Culpable homicide - 5 years in prison
2. For the Tasha shooting which he was found guilty for - 3 years in prison, wholly suspended for 5 years with conditions. The two sentences will run concurrently. His family is not planning to appeal.

He will serve a minimum of 10 months in jail, after that, he'll be sent home to serve the remainder of his sentence under strict supervision controls. This will be up to South African Correction Services.

Indian Mizoram Premier League footballer dies from spinal injuries after somersault goal celebration

A footballer has died after a celebration went tragically wrong in India’s Mizoram Premier League.

Peter Biaksangzuala died in hospital on Sunday after falling on his head while attempting a somersault after scoring for Bethlehem Vengthlang FC.

The 23-year-old midfielder scored a 62nd-minute equaliser against Chanmari West FC in Tuesday's league encounter and celebrated acrobatically.

The midfielder's celebration goes horribly wrong as he lands on his head in Tuesday's match

Biaksangzuala mistimed his landing and his head took the brunt of the fall.

Team-mates immediately rushed to his aid and he was carried off the pitch on a stretcher.

Biaksangzuala was rushed to Aizawl Civil Hospital where a CT scan revealed he had severely damaged his spinal cord and he was put into an intensive care unit.
